Behavioral Resource Specialist for Genesee County mothers, kids, and families

It’s one thing to know you or a loved one needs mental health support. It’s another to actually get through the mental health system and into the door at the right place. If you live in Genesee County, our Behavioral Resource Specialist (BRS) is here to help you find local mental health support when you need it most – right now.

How can a Behavioral Resource Specialist help me?

Working with Genesee Health System, the BRS is an expert in local mental health resources. They know what mental health services and resources are available to you in Genesee County, and they know what is needed to get an appointment for services. Because of this knowledge, the BRS can get you connected to the right provider and help you set up the first appointment as quickly as possible.

What happens when I work with a Behavioral Resource Specialist?

  1. You (or your provider) fill out a short form to share what you need help with.
  2. The BRS looks over your form then contacts you by phone to share the recommended mental health services. At this time, the BRS will also give you tips for setting up an appointment, answer any questions you have, and explain what to expect at your first appointment.
  3. After your planned appointment, the BRS will call you to make sure you received the help you needed. If you need more help, the BRS can give more support at that time.

Who can get help from a Behavioral Resource Specialist?

  • People caring for a child, teen, or young adult up to age 26
  • Older teens and young adults up to age 26
  • People who are pregnant or caring for a baby that is under 12 months old

Do I have to pay for this?

The BRS service is free – there is no cost to you! It is paid for by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Flint Water Crisis funds.

How do I get in touch with a Behavioral Resource Specialist?

It’s quick and easy! You have two options:

  • Option 1: Fill out our online form
  • Option 2: Call the BRS phone line at (810) 241-6491

Your doctor can also help you connect with the BRS by phone, by filling out the online form, or by sending a referral form (download PDF or Word version) by fax or email. If you want the BRS to talk to your doctor, then the Consent to Exchange Behavioral Health Information form also needs to be filled out by you and your doctor.

After reaching out, the BRS will call you within a few days.
