School-Based Consultation

MC3 offers no-cost psychiatry consultation and behavioral health education in select intermediate school districts (ISDs) in Michigan. These consultations and education are provided to licensed school mental health professionals, including school therapists, social workers, psychologists, and school nurses, through the following key offerings:

  • MC3 school-based consultation provides school-based professionals with the opportunity to meet virtually with MC3 consulting specialists who offer behavioral health guidance and recommendations for students.
  • MC3 Huddle is a virtual group consultation for school-based professionals to meet with MC3 consulting specialists and the student’s primary care physician or other treating providers. These consultations are designed for multi-disciplinary and multi-site collaboration, offering behavioral health guidance from MC3 consulting specialists.
  • Web-based trainings are taught by MC3 consulting specialists on topics of interest to assist school-based professionals in managing behavioral health conditions.

What is school-based consultation?

School-based professionals can request consultation with MC3 consulting specialists, including child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, and local MC3 Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs). Once a school-based professional submits a consult request via the secure online form, an MC3 coordinator will contact the school-based professional to coordinate a virtual meeting with MC3. During this consultation, the school-based professionals will receive behavioral health guidance and recommendations to assist them in supporting their students.

How do consultations work?

What is an MC3 Huddle?

MC3 Huddles provide an opportunity for school-based professionals to request a collaborative, multi-disciplinary virtual group consultation with MC3 consulting specialists. The MC3 Huddle is similar to MC3 school-based consultation, but also includes the student’s primary care physician or other treating providers. Once a school-based professional submits a consult request and provides a release of information signed by the student’s caregiver, an MC3 coordinator will reach out to the school’s point of contact and the treating community provider to schedule a virtual group consultation. Consultations provided in MC3 Huddles can include guidance around diagnostic clarification, therapeutic/behavioral interventions, assessment and testing, or community resources. Note: Prescribing health care providers who have signed up for MC3 can also request a Huddle with a participating ISD.

What are web-based trainings?

MC3 provides three 90-minute web-based trainings each year on behavioral health concerns frequently seen in the school setting based on feedback from participating ISDs. These no-cost trainings are offered live with CEUs and are recorded and made available for school professionals to watch on their own time. Previous training recordings can be found below.

What is not included?

MC3 is not an emergency service. MC3 psychiatrists do not prescribe medication or provide ongoing treatment but support providers as they provide care.

Who is eligible?

School-based professionals, including school therapists, social workers, psychologists, and school nurses who work in ISDs that have an agreement with MC3 are eligible to receive these school-based services. If you work in an ISD in Michigan that is not yet participating in MC3 consultation and are interested in learning more, contact us at [email protected].
