Learning objectives

  • Describe why the adolescent brain is uniquely vulnerable to substance use
  • Summarize national trends in adolescent substance use
  • Implement evidence-based screening for substance use among adolescents
  • Differentiate between problematic use and a substance use disorder (i.e. “addiction”)
  • Identify patients who require referral to further treatment and the appropriate treatment(s) to refer them to

Target audience

  • Michigan health care providers, including those working in the following settings: Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Pediatric Subspecialties, School-Based Health Centers, and Psychiatry
  • Michigan school-based mental health professionals and school nurses
